Baffling Bill baffles audience at the PIX

LAPEER — The PIX Theatre in downtown Lapeer sold out on Saturday, Oct. 29 for the annual Halloween Magic Show with local magician Baffling Bill. The magic show was the final event of the Fall Celebration that included pumpkin carving, the downtown Treat Walk and the last day of the Lapeer Farmers’ Market.

Baffling Bill started the show at the PIX by pushing a set of large illuminated light bulbs through one of his female assistants, followed by a long applause from the audience. The tricks only went up from there, as did another of his assistants. Near the end of the show, the second assistant was levitated above a table on the PIX stage in front of nearly 300 people.

Not all of his tricks were large illusions, however. Baffling Bill selected several children from the audience to participate in smaller, light-hearted tricks. Those children were all given magic trick sets for their help on stage. The popular magician was also joined on stage by Gus the bunny, who performed his own magic tricks with a local child.

The show ended with a large illusion made famous by Harry Houdini, who died on Halloween night 1926 in Detroit. The trick, called “Metamorphosis,” involved the assistant being tied up in a cloth bag and then locked inside a wooden crate. Baffling Bill stood on top of the crate and momentarily raised a cloth over his head. When the cloth was dropped a moment later, the assistant was on top of the box instead, and Baffling Bill was found inside the locked crate, tied up in the bag and wearing a different outfit.
